Glossary

3D (Three-dimensional) - a computer generated representation of a real object or scene with the perception of depth. Three-dimensions work on the x and y axis (width and height) drawn on a flat piece of paper with the added z axis (depth) drawn going perpendicularly into or out of the paper.

Animation - a sequence of still images which create the illusion of movement. Through manipulation of a model or by use of virtual cameras mimicking film cameras, the movement is set up and each frame is rendered and brought together to create the animation.

Fly-through - a virtual tour of a 3D scene through the use of virtual cameras and animation. The scene can be shown as if the user is walking about the environment or flying above in a helicopter, a successful method of demonstrating a 3D model in a clear medium.

Illustration - a component diagram or drawing usually communicating technical information visually. Technical illustrations generally have to describe and explain the subjects to a non-technical audience.

Photorealism - an image or animation aiming to be true to life, with the appearance, lighting and perception of depth set to imitate a photographic composition. This is done by using a 3D model and the computer assisted techniques of rendering to help envisage a scene or object in real terms.

Render - a computer generated image produced by combining a 3D model with textures, reflections & refractions, lighting & shading, and atmosphere. The computer will apply calculations to bring all these elements together to display a 2D image. The render can vary from photorealistic to traditional cell-shaded with strong outlines and blocks of colour.

Schematic - a schematic is a diagram which represents an object in a graphical manner sometimes with dimensions to demonstrate the scale. Examples are circuit diagrams, mechanical or engineering diagrams and architectural plans.

Virtual - a computer generated simulation of any environment.

Visualisation - 3D modelling to create images, diagrams, or animations to communicate a message. Visualisation through computer generation is an effective way to communicate both abstract and concrete ideas.

Clearpixel provided exactly what we were looking for – pictures to help both ourselves, our future neighbours and the council visualise how the design would look when complete.
